BAPTIST CHURCH

Polly Averill lived where the Baptist Church now stands.  She left town because of the alarm, "The British are coming",

on this day September 11, 1814.  She hurried down to the bridge on Bridge Street but she found the planks were up.

An American officer had some planks laid and they helped her over.  She finally joined the other refugees on the east

ridge of Hallock Hill near Peru, N.Y.  From that point they all saw in the distance the smoke from the battle on Lake

                           Champlain.

British soldiers were half buried in the garden of Mrs. Polly Averill.
