CRAB ISLAND

CRAB ISLAND, (originally called Isle of St. Michael) and site of a monument, tall granite shaft marks the spot where the bodies of British

and American sailors who fell in the Battle of Plattsburgh lie buried.  In 1906 a resolution was introduced in  Congress to name the island

                Macdonough National Park.
During the battle, the British ship Finch came up on the reef at the northeast end of Crab Island.  Two field pieces open fire on the Finch

from the Island.  These were manned by American invalids from the hospital established there prior to the battle.  The wounded from the

British and American fleet were taken to the hospital on the Island.
