Early photo of Presbyterian Church
First church in Clinton County, organized in 1797 and begun in 1812 , the original church was completed in 1816, but during
construction was used as a barracks during the Battle of Plattsburgh. It burned in 1867 and was rebuilt in the 1870s.
On September 11, 1814 the British used the church, which was only framed out at the time, as a cavalry barracks.
American troops, in their attempt to rout out the British, attacked the church with "hot shot", which meant that the
cannon balls were heated to red hot before they were fired. Fortunately, the church wasn't damaged. It was completed
in 1816 and dedicated on Christmas Day of that year.
