Major General Jacob Brown
FORT BROWN - One of three (Fort Scott & Fort Moreau), "sand lot forts", earthen fort, built in August 1814 by General Macomb and successfully
defended against British assault in Sept. 11, 1814 land battle of Plattsburgh. The embankment is all that remains of Fort Brown, which constituted
the left flank of the American line of defense at the Battle of Plattsburgh. It was manned by detachments of the 30th and 31st regiments of the infantry
under Lieut. Col. Stoors. The fort was named
after Major General Jacob Brown.
It was at Fort
Brown and other neighboring embattlements like Fort Moreau and Fort Scott that
the Americans succeeded in stopping the British from
crossing the Saranac River. The seemingly insignificant event was influential in convincing the British to sign the peace treaty that led to
United States independence.
