Treaty of Ghent

Dec 24, 1814

The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium on December 24th, 1814. The Treaty ended the war between the

United States and the United Kingdom. The Treaty also made both sides return the land they had conquered from each other.

They agreed that the 49th parallel of latitude was going to be the boundary between the United States and Canada.

It stretched all the way from the Great Lakes to the Rockies. 15 000 natives died in the war, more than the British and American

soldiers combined. There was now peace between the British and the Americans, and their territory was separated. Now more of the land was

being organized and divided into countries and regions.  Canada wasn't quite Canada yet, but it was well on its way after the Treaty of Ghent and the war.

The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. Peace negotiations began in Ghent, Belgium,

starting in August of 1814. After four months of talks, the treaty was signed on December 24, 1814. The Senate unanimously ratified the

Treaty of Ghent on February 16, 1815.
