RIVERSIDE CEMETERY    

                                                     

                        

    Marble slab laid over Downie's grave in the Riverside Cemetery bear these words:

        "Sacred to the memory of
George Downie, Esq., a post captain in the Royal British Navy, who gloriously fell on board his B. M. S. the 'Confiance

        while leading the vessels under his command to the attack of the American flotilla at anchor in Cumberland bay, off Plattsburgh, on the 11th of

        September 1814.  To mark the spot where the remains of a gallant officer and sincere friend were honorably interred, this stone has been erected

        by his affectionate sister-in-law, Mary Downie, 1851."

                                                                                              

  

         Riverside Cemetery contains the graves of both American officers killed in the battle of Plattsburgh.
         Two of the soldiers buried in Riverside Cemetery are:
Joseph Barron
- Commodore Macdonough's confidence pilot, and Captain Downie - a post Captain in the Royal British Navy, who gloriously fell on

board his Royal Majesty's Ship the Confidence, while leading the vessel to the attack of the American Flotilla at anchor in Cumberland Bay, of

Plattsburgh, on the 11th of September 1814.
